Anthony Pettis, Hatsu Hioki impressive at UFC 144
Anthony Pettis was already known for one of the most memorable kicks in MMA history. He added to that legend with a left kick that knocked out UFC veteran Joe Lauzon at 1:21 in the first round of their bout at UFC 144 at Saitama Super Arena in Japan.
With that perfectly-placed kick, Pettis won his second fight in a row. After the fight was stopped, he jumped on top of the fence and gestured for the belt.
“Winning that fight is an amazing feeling. I was on a bit of a down streak in 2011, but 2012 is my year and I’m getting a title shot. I’m back, focused and ready to go, I didn’t get touched. I think I confused him with my southpaw, had him biting on the jab then threw the high kick and it landed. I wanted to put on a good show for the fans because without them, I wouldn’t be Anthony Pettis,” Pettis said after the fight.
A title shot was supposed to be his after he won the WEC’s lightweight belt in December of 2010. However, a loss to Clay Guida in June squashed those plans. Now, with an impressive knockout of Lauzon and a win over Jeremy Stephens, he’s making a case that he belongs at the top of the UFC’s stacked lightweight division.
Heading into the fight with Pettis, Lauzon was riding a high after stopping both Melvin Guilland and Curt Warburton in the first round. This loss sends him back to the drawing board.
Hioki wins over Palaszewski
In just his second UFC bout, Hatsu Hioki showed that he should be the next challenger for Jose Aldo’s featherweight belt with a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 dismantling of Bart Palaszewski.
In the first round, Hioki knocked Palaszewski down early. Palaszewski returned to his feet only to be taken down again. Hioki moved to side guard and threw repeated punches. To avoid strikes, Palaszewski gave up his back. As he tried to move out, Hioki pulled Palaszewski’s arm into an armbar. He defended and moved out, but Hioki got back on top and threw several strikes. Palaszewski was more comfortable in the second round, keeping the bout standing. He was able to land more combinations than Hioki.
[Video: Watch Hioki-Palaszewski fight highlights]
In the third, Hioki brought the fight to the canvas immediately, taking down Palaszewski with a nasty trip. Hioki moved to side control and again used repeated shots to Palaszewski’s head. When Palaszewski tried to escape, Hioki took his back. Palaszewski avoided the submissions, but Hioki’s dominance was clear.

Photo: Jon Jones, Kate Upton and Jane Lynch pal around at Daytona 500
A UFC champ, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and an Emmy-winning actress met up at the Daytona 500 today. Jon Jones was an honorary race official, while Kate Upton and Jane Lynch were there to spend some time being awesome.
The race was delayed until Monday, so they had plenty of time to discuss throwing elbows, photoshoots, and wearing track suits. Hopefully, Lynch was offering “Bones” a cameo on “Glee.” Nothing could prepare him better for his fight with Rashad Evans than a song and dance with New Directions.
Jones also got to meet some of the biggest names in racing:
And he even got a car with his name on it.

Checa wins as Biaggi makes incredible recovery

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) recovered from his big race one crash to post his first win of the year but arguably an even greater performance came from second place finisher Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing).
Checa hit the front early on but Biaggi had run of track on lap one, kept his bike upright and restarted last, then fought through to take a second place and a clear championship lead with a total of 45 points.
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) overhauled a slowing Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) in a breathtaking final lap to get his first dry weather Kawasaki podium.
The injured Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) put in a gritty ride to secure fifth place while his team-mate Marco Melandri was one place behind.
Melandri is second in the points to Biaggi with 30, one point ahead of Sykes in overall third. Checa is fourth with 25 points.

WSBK: Superpole at Phillip Island Cancelled After Tragedy
It is our displeasure to report that Saturday’s World Superbike Superpole qualifying event at Phillip Island was cancelled after a fatality occurred during the Australian Superstock 600 support race. Though McIntyre received immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries, and event organizers …

Video: Ryan Bader knocks out Keith Jardine
Though he has a strong wrestling background, Ryan Bader has plenty of power in his hands. He showed this when he knocked out Keith Jardine in the third round of their bout at UFC 110.
Bader had a long undefeated streak that was stopped by eventual champion Jon Jones. Tito Ortiz added to Bader’s troubles by submitting him at UFC 132.
He got back on the winning track with a first-round knockout of Jason Brilz in November. This weekend, he has another chance to show he’s in the upper echelon of light heavyweights against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Will he do it, or will Jackson get the win? UFC on Fuel TV 1 postfight: Dana White hammers himself and the NSAC
Dana White always says what’s on his mind. He’s not afraid to call someone out even if it’s himself.
Seconds after Jake Ellenberger crawled across the finish line to win his three-round fight against Diego Sanchez, fans began asking “what happened to all UFC main events being five rounds?”
Fuel TV’s Ariel Helwani asked White.
“Because we blew it. It should’ve been a five round fight. [...] I’m looking at the fight going … ‘yeah, this should’ve been five rounds.’ I think that when Diego and Ellenberger went back in there for that fourth the place would’ve went crazy. People were ready for it at home,” said White.
White wouldn’t name names. He took the blame. He confirmed it was not Fuel TV’s decision. More importantly, he said all main events will be five rounders. Back in June, White announced that would be the case for all main events. Somehow this fight slipped through the cracks.

White also commented on the latest with Nick Diaz’s likely suspension coming from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He knows Diaz will probably get pounded and he has little problem with that.
“How about the Nevada State Athletic Commission royally kissed Floyd Mayweather’s ass when he walked in there. This guy is going to jail,” White said. “The judge is allowing him to not go to jail until he has his fight. Right?”
It still annoys White that Chael Sonnen was denied a license by the state to coach on “The Ultimate Fighter.” Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather facing jail time had his jail arrival delayed and got a license from the commission to fight on May 5.
“You know how much money we bring into Las Vegas every year with the fights that we put on? You know how much we contribute to the city of Las Vegas? Do you think for a second if we had a fighter that was going to go to jail that the athletic commission would license him to fight so that the fight could go on? There’s no way in hell,” White said. “Am I the only guy on this [expletive] planet who thinks that’s crazy? Seriously. It just blows my mind.”
White was very complimentary of the effort turned in by Sanchez calling him a professional. When asked about the right weight class for Sanchez, White said he can fight anywhere he wants.

He wasn’t so complimentary of Dave Herman. A chiseled, athletic heavyweight, Herman fought well in the first round but lacked focus to stick with a gameplan against Stefan Struve. The 6-foot-11 Struve eventually used his length and effective combinations to put Herman away. White didn’t rip Herman’s performance, but criticized his prefight antics.
“I like Dave Herman. The stuff that he pulled this week? I can’t stand that stuff,” White told Fuel TV.
That stuff was Herman growing a huge beard and then dying his beard and thick body hair all black. Not the biggest deal, but when you lose the way Herman did, it opens the door for the critics.
“Listen, if you want to get noticed … get noticed for your fighting skills,” White said. “Not for coming in like a gorilla or wearing pink scarfs. And coming in to “Macho Man?” As I was sitting there, I’m thinking ‘did I seriously let him come into this song?’”
White said he’s not anti-Village People, but he’s not into the joking around.

You tell us: How should the UFC handle the Condit-Diaz-GSP mess?
The Carlos Condit-Nick Diaz controversy continues unabated. In the latest bit of news, the on-again, off-again rematch again appears to be off, and speculation has begun as to the reasons why.
If the UFC doesn’t get Condit-Diaz 2, it has to go back to the drawing board and figure out which direction to take the top of the welterweight division for the remainder of 2012.
The company also has a habit of making matches Internet fans want when they make enough noise. So here’s your chance to play matchmaker. Vote in our poll and tell us which big fight you want to see next at 170 pounds.
Hold off for Georges St-Pierre vs. Condit: This was, after all, what was promised to begin with.
Don’t give up on making Condit-Diaz 2 happen; have the winner fight GSP: The first fight was close and there’s a lot of fan interest, so go for it.
Strip GSP of the title and let him fight Diaz: If Diaz is the fight St-Pierre really wants, let him have it, but don’t hold up the rest of the welterweight division to do it.
Have Condit defend interim belt against someone else while GSP recuperates: Condit has already defeated Diaz and St-Pierre will be out awhile, so have Condit defend against another top welterweight contender.
Enough with all the Condit-Diaz-GSP talk: For those who would rather talk about anything else at this point.

UFC on FUEL TV 1 weigh-in: Sanchez looks healthy at 170 pounds
Diego Sanchez was the man to watch during today’s UFC on FUEL 1 weigh-in.
In this ever evolving sport, welterweights are getting bigger and bigger. At 5-foot-9 Sanchez is small for the weight. He looked bloated on fight night for his battle last March against Martin Kampmann. This afternoon, he looked much healthier.
Sanchez explained to USA Today that he screwed up the weight cut before the Kampmann fight.
The last fight for Martin Kampmann, I really messed up on the diet. I didn’t cut out salt. I didn’t cut out carbs. I ended up having to cut 14 pounds the day of the weigh-ins. That’s three hours of cardio and another 30 minutes in the sauna.
Sanchez said it cost him late in the fight when he couldn’t pour it on.
I felt it in the fight, and even though I still was able to fight hard and put a hard pace, if I would have done the weight cut properly, I would have been able to press the fight even harder in the second and third rounds and, I believe, finished the fight.
So there’s no excuses for Sanchez and that means a victory for Jake Ellenberger is worth that much more.
