James Wilks, TUF winner and UFC veteran, retires after warnings of possible paralysis
“The Ultimate Fighter” season nine winner James Wilks announced his retirement from MMA after doctors advised him he could become paralyzed if he continued to fight.
Wilks had a serious knee injury that kept him out of the Octagon. His last bout was a loss to Claude Patrick in October of 2010. When that healed, a neck injury from his rugby-playing days flared up and Wilks realized how serious previous warning signs were.
“I had problems in a couple of the fights that I didn’t really talk about,” he said. “In one of the fights, I got hit, and the whole left side of my body went numb, all the way down to the toes.”
Even with the doctors’ warnings, Wilks called the decision difficult, particularly because he went out on a loss. He went 1-2 in the UFC after beating DaMarques Johnson in the TUF finale. As more fighters age, they will be faced with the issue of retirement. Kudos to Wilks for being strong enough to walk away before he was damaged permanently.

Daniel Cormier: I am a fighter (VIDEO)
Last week, we brought you Josh Barnett’s tale of “I am a fighter,” so it’s only fair to bring you his opponent’s. Daniel Cormier shares his path to fighting here:
Cormier’s path to MMA has been far from easy. After not competing in the Olympics because of a kidney problem after making weight, he stepped away from competition. MMA gave him a place to enjoy competition again. Since his first bout in Sept. of 2009, Cormier has put together an 8-0 record, including a memorable knockout of Antonio Silva.
Does Cormier have what it takes to beat Barnett and win Strikeforce’s heavyweight grand prix? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook and Twitter.

MMA Marketplace: Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix match-up of the walkout shirts
At Saturday’s Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix final, Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier will face off in the finals of a tournament that neither was expected to win. It’s time to break down the most important aspect of their bout: their shirts.

On the left, you have Cormier’s shirt from TrauMMA which is designed as a nod to his Louisiana roots with the fleur-de-lis and hometown flag on his shoulder. On the right is Barnett’s latest shirt. It’s not designated as a walkout shirt, but it’s his latest available.
Though Barnett’s shirt would make a cool design on a black light painting circa 1996, it’s falling flat as a t-shirt. For going with an unconventional color and meaningful imagery, Cormier is the winner. Buy his shirt for $29.98, and Barnett’s for $19.98.

Tim Kennedy makes a convincing Black Swan (VIDEO)
Strikeforce middleweight contender is waiting on a date, time, and place for his expected fight with champion Luke Rockhold. While he has the time, he’s working on his acting chops. Is it just me, or does he make a convincing “Black Swan?” He already did a great job as Katy Perry, so what else do we want to see Kennedy try? He seems to be a fan of costumes, so Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind?” Capt. Willard from “Apocalypse Now” could bring in both his military background and love of make-up. If Strikeforce keeps him (inexplicably) on ice much longer, Kennedy will be up for an Academy Award soon.

Nate Diaz, Jim Miller make weight at UFC on Fox 3 weigh-ins in New Jersey

Jim Miller made weight in front of his home crowd at the Izod Center in Newark, just a half hour from where he trains. His opponent, Nate Diaz, also made weight to make their five-round fight on Saturday official.
The rest of the weigh-ins were uneventful. Danny Castillo sported the best outfit, coming to the stage in what appeared to be a suit and tie, but tore off like track pants. John Dodson’s socks were the best accessory. John Lineker came in a pound heavy for his flyweight bout with Louis Gaudinot, and will hand over $1,200 to Gaudinot.

Melandri makes history with first BMW SBK race win

A truly historic 1-2 for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team saw Marco Melandri win a 23-lap opening race at Donington with his team-mate Leon Haslam only 0.728 seconds behind.
An eventual five rider fight for the podium places provided overtaking manoeuvres and personal duels aplenty as the race order changed multiple times. Tissot-Superpole winner Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) won a tense battle to go third, with Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) making up places in the final laps to overhaul Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) and take fourth place. The leading five were covered by 2.102 seconds at the end of the race.
World Champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was sixth, four seconds from the win. He made it five different manufacturers in the top six at the flag.

Pirelli notes from Donington Park

Giorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyzes the fifth round of the year, held at Donington Park (UK), from the point of view of the championship’s official one-make tyre supplier.
“This weekend on English soil provided truly great and heated races for both Superbike and Supersport. The work done during the tests at Imola proved to be very important: in Superbike the R302 solution for the rear, developed from this year’s standard SC1, designed to work at lower temperatures and to prevent cold tearing, was quite popular with pretty much all the riders. In Supersport as well, the R303, also a development of the SC1, was chosen by various riders. For this reason, given the excellent feedback received, we will definitely see these two solutions again in some of the future championship races. The Superbike Championship competition is very tight every year, and this year is no exception: in race two six different manufacturers crossed the finish line in the top six places, which shows just how much Pirelli’s work contributes to placing all the teams in optimum conditions to be able to realistically aspire to the world title. In addition to congratulations to Marco Melandri and Jonathan Rea, respectively the winners of race 1 and race 2, my compliments go to Max Biaggi who had the best lap in both races as well as Sam Lowes, current ranking leader of the Pirelli Supersport Best Lap Awards”
Pirelli BEST LAP Awards:
SBK Race 1 – Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) 1’28.992 (Lap 6)
SBK Race 2 – Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) 1’28.995 (Lap 4)
Total BEST LAP (SBK): Checa C. (Althea Racing) 3, Biaggi M. (Aprilia Racing Team) 3, Sykes T. (Kawasaki Racing Team) 2, Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing) 1
WSS – Sam Lowes (Bogdanka PTR Honda) 1’31.097 (Lap 21)
Total BEST LAP (WSS): Lowes S. (Bogdanka PTR Honda) 2, Foret F. (Kawasaki Intermoto Step) 1, Parkes B. (Ten Kate Racing Products) 1, Lanzi L. (Prorace) 1.

Fourth Tissot-Superpole of 2012 for Sykes and Kawasaki

In Superpole 3 Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) went over 0.3 seconds faster than the existing track best with a 1 minute 27.716 seconds lap that gave him his fourth Tissot-Superpole win of 2012. Close behind was his fellow Englishman Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), the only other rider inside the 1’27 bracket. Haslam’s team-mate Marco Melandri was third and the front row for tomorrow’s races was completed by Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), who came good after some challenging times in earlier practice sessions.
Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing) earned a top five place on the grid, with Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) sixth. Leon Camier (Fixi Crescent Suzuki) scored seventh and will be joined on the second row by Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati). 2011 World champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) will start Sunday’s race from the third row of the grid, in ninth place.

Braulio Estima Responds to Cesar Gracie Statement
Nick Diaz’s Coach and Manager Cesar Gracie recently released a statement on his student’s recent no-show for his superfight at the World BJJ-Expo. The statement placed most of the blame on the promoter “Junior” and opponent Braulio Estima. Estima (a 3x world BJJ champion and 2009 ADCC absolute champion) took offense to parts of the statement, namely the assertions that he hid his MMA aspirations, his weight, and about Cesar’s explanation of the night’s events.

Incredible drama as Rea wins and other top riders go out

Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) took his second race win of the season after an incident-strewn race at Donington. On the first corner Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) and Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) touched and Checa went down, taking out Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati) and Checa’s team-mate Davide Giugliano.
Then Laverty crashed down Craner Curves, as up front eventual third place man Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) led for most of the race distance. He was finally mugged by a warring faction which included eventual second place man Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) and both BMW Motorrad Motorsport Riders, Leon Haslam and Marco Melandri. After a multitude of overtakes and riders running off track on occasion, Haslam looked to have it won until both he and Melandri ran wide at the very last corner and Rea pushed inside. They collided and Haslam fell, knocking off Melandri as he slid on the track. Rea held on to win by just over half a second from Biaggi, with Sykes two second back. Leon Camier (Fixi Crescent Suzuki) was an impressive fourth.
In the championship, the final dramas mean that Biaggi has 128.5 points, Sykes 123.5, Rea 108, Checa 105.5 and Melandri 97.5.
