Stipe Miocic pounds Philip De Fries for quick KO victory at UFC on Fuel TV 1
Division 1 baseball and wrestling are on his resume, but if Stipe Miocic keeps going this way in mixed martial arts those accomplishments will be a footnote. The former elite athlete at Cleveland State put on a show on Fuel TV by finishing a fellow unbeaten Philip De Fries in just 43 seconds in Omaha, Ne.
After a plodding victory over Joey Beltran in his debut at UFC, Miocic looked to send a message here. He came out looking to bang and paid the price in the early seconds. Just 16 seconds in, De Fries (8-1, 1-1 UFC) drilled him with a three-punch combination. The Independence, Ohio native stood his ground stuffing a weak attempt at a clinch and reset himself.
Miocic (8-0. 2-0 UFC) landed a big right of own with 4:25 left that stopped De Fries in his tracks. A submission specialist, De Fries freaked out and tried to punch his way out of trouble. It didn’t work. De Fries got pushed back into the cage when Miocic landed another big right. That was all it took. He dropped to his hands and his knees, and covered up. He didn’t want to fight anymore, so referee Dan Miragliotta saved him after seven more shots.
Miocic’s skill set is impressive. He was a high level college wrestler at 197 pounds and also played on the Cleveland State baseball team.
He’s the rare wrestler, who also boxed at a young age. He’s got a Golden Gloves title to his credit. At 29, he’s getting a little bit of a late start to his MMA career, but it’s also allowed to grow into his frame. The 6-foot-4, 240 pounder didn’t have an ounce of fat on him. He continues the trend of new heavyweights, who are much more athletic than the big men of the part.

Dillashaw regains his status as a top 135-pound prospect to watch
The outcome of “The Ultimate Fighter” doesn’t always predict who’ll be the best fighter to come off the show. T.J. Dillashaw wasn’t up to snuff at the TUF 14 Finale, but he more than made up for it tonight by putting on a clinch against Walel Watson. Dillashaw rolled with a unanimous decision victory, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26.
Dillashaw, 25, destroyed Watson from the opening seconds. He scored two takedowns early and worked what appeared to be three nasty chokes. And that was all in the first round. In the second, Watson found himself on his back just 24 seconds in. By late in the second, he’d outstruck Watson 110-2.
At 5-11, Watson is extremely long for the division, but Dillashaw did a great job staying away from any submission predicaments by working mostly from half guard. He also mounted Watson on several occasions.
At the end of the fight, Dillashaw’s advantage in the stats department was staggering. He outlanded 172-12.

TUF 12 champ Brookins looks explosive in easy victory over Rocha
If Jonathan Brookins can clean up one bugaboo in his game he has a chance to be a real player in the UFC’s featherweight division. Brookins holds his chin a little too high, but it didn’t matter tonight because he made such quick work of Vagner Rocha.
A flubbed Rocha takedown attempt turned into a dominant position for Brookins, who scored the rare top control knockout of Rocha at the 1:43 mark of the first round.
Rocha caught a Brookin kick and tried to drive forward to shoot for a double leg takedown. Brookins easily thwarted the attempt and pushed forward to get Rocha on his back. Instead of staying patient and protecting himself, the Brazilian started grasping at a leg to potentially attempt a knee bar and foot submission.
Brookins is too slick for that, so he started raining down right hands. the first three didn’t land cleanly, but the fourth did. So much so that is appeared to knockout Rocha, who ate three more shots before the ref tossed Brookins to the side.
UFC on Fuel TV 1 undercard results:
Ivan Menjivar def. John Albert via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 3:45
Justin Salas def. Anton Kuivanen via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-27)
Tim Means def. Bernado Magalhaes vis unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26).

Fighter misses out on UFC debut with ankle issue: Sean Loeffler suffers injury in warm ups

What a bummer for Sean Loeffler. The 29-year-old was set to make his debut at UFC on Fuel TV 1, but apparently injured himself just before the fight.
MMAjunkie reported that Loeffler’s opponent Buddy Roberts, also making his debut, was paid his win and show money. Loeffler was also paid his show money. That’s a great gesture for two guys who were minutes away from laying it on the line.

The odd path Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis took to UFC 144
Two former WEC champions will appear on Saturday’s UFC 144 card. Benson Henderson, the man who held the lightweight for more than a year, will fight Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight strap. Anthony Pettis, the man who took Henderson’s title with the jaw-dropping “Showtime Kick,” will take on Joe Lauzon.
Those MMA fans who have been living under a rock since December 16, 2010, when Pettis beat Henderson, might wonder how it’s Henderson, not Pettis challenging Edgar.
After winning the WEC belt in their final event before being absorbed by the UFC, Pettis was supposed to get the next UFC lightweight title shot. He was supposed to fight the winner of Edgar and Gray Maynard’s New Years Day 2011 bout.
But Pettis was put on the backburner when Edgar and Maynard’s bout ended in a draw. Their rematch was more important than unifying the WEC and UFC belts. Pettis opted not to wait for a title shot, and lost a decision to Clay Guida in June.
For Henderson, it was a win over Guida — plus beatdowns of Jim Miller and Mark Bocek — that earned him the title shot at Saitama Super Arena this weekend. No fighter wants to lose, particularly when his belt is on the line, but the loss to Pettis still bothers Henderson. His laid back strategy late in the bout still makes him angry. Was it the best thing to happen to him?
“It was heart-wrenching,” he said to MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes. “I was sad, and I’m still sad. It was heart-breaking. …Every time I’m out there, I give you guys everything. I open up my heart and soul. I hold nothing back. To come up short, and to come up short in that manner, that hurt. But I’ll never let that happen again.”
Even Pettis has noticed the difference in his former opponent.
“Ben was on a tear. He was killing guys in the WEC. Then I come in there, we go five rounds and I win the decision, and he was back to square one. I think a loss makes everyone a little hungrier, and that’s what it did for him.”
Pettis beat Jeremy Stephens in October. He will fight Lauzon early enough on Saturday’s card that, if healthy, he can sit in the crowd and watch Henderson take on Edgar. At just 25, Pettis has plenty of time to get back to a title fight, and what could serve as better fuel than watching the man he beat take the title shot Pettis was supposed to get.

With AKA split, Jon Fitch vs. Josh Koscheck could happen says Dana White
Dana White has said it for years, the fight game isn’t a place for team camaraderie in the long run, The fight game will eventually will split up even the best of friends.
The heat between former teammates Jon Jones and Rashad Evans has been palpable for over a year and now we could see two guys, who appeared to be even closer, fighting in the future.
Josh Koscheck is done with American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. That could mean the roadblocks are gone for a Koscheck match against Jon Fitch.
As teammates they said they’d never fight each other unless it was for a title. That always drove their boss nuts. Now that Koscheck is on his own, would they pass up a chance for a title shot if it meant they had to fight?
Koscheck gave a cryptic answer when conversing with White during the UFC 143 postfight press conference.
“That’s what I whispered to him,” White told the media. “I said, ‘Now I’m doing the Jon Fitch fight.’ He said, ‘Good luck with that.’”
Koscheck gave no details as to why he split from the camp. He first indicated things were on shaky ground during the week when he said he was fighting for “Team Me” not “Team AKA.”
He confirmed things during the postfight.
“I’ll be training out of Fresno for now. I’m no longer affiliated with some of the people at the gym that I’ve been training at. I’m going to do my own thing,” said Koscheck.
What happened at AKA? Koscheck wouldn’t even mention the gym by name.
Koscheck barely squeaked by Mike Pierce and admitted his motivation to fight was less than stellar. Between the drama of leaving his longtime team and Pierce not being a huge name, the veteran UFC star produced a lackluster performance.
“Josh looked flat tonight. I expected Josh to have the faster hands. He didn’t really let his hands go tonight,” White said. “He looked flat.”
Maybe a Fitch fight, with the winner getting a title shot, is exactly the energy Koscheck needs. For now White said he’s not planning on Fitch-Koscheck, but he’s open to it.
“No. I’m just [expletive] with him. If the fight made sense … because there was a time when those two were [at the top of the rankings] … but if the fight made sense, yeah, I’d try to make it. I wouldn’t do it just to do it,” said White.
Fitch needs to get back in there as soon as possible. Knocking on the door for a second title shot for the last three years, Fitch’s chances got crushed when he was knocked out in just 12 seconds at UFC 141 against Johny Hendricks. In the USA Today/Bloody Elbow 170-pound rankings, he dropped all the way down to No. 7.

Fouls lead to an Alex Caceres loss while Matt Brown is back on track at UFC 143
LAS VEGAS — Twice, Alex Caceres landed kicks to Edwin Figueroa’s groin that looked like he was attempting to nail 60-yard field goals. But they cost him an extra point and the decision in their bantamweight bout on Saturday at UFC 143.
Caceres landed his first kick early in the first round at Mandalay Bay, which sent Figueroa rolling across the mat in agony. Referee Herb Dean issued Caceres a “strong warning” after Figueroa signaled he was able to continue.
The rest of the first round was wild, as Figueroa connected with a head kick and nearly finished the fight, but Caceres rallied and went for several submission attempts late in the round.
Midway through the second, Caceres struck again. This time, Dean took the highly unusual step of docking the fighter two points for the infraction as the fight continued.
Figueroa won round three on all three cards. The scores were 28-27 across the board, two for Figueroa and one for Caceres. If there had been a standard one-point deduction, the bout would have been a majority draw, with two 28-28 cards and a 29-27 for Caceres.
“I felt like it was a hard earned paycheck,” said Figueroa. “He was a good fighter. I had to dig deep for this one. He came out and landed a few shots early. It was a tough fight but I came out the winner.”
The loss was the third in four fights for Caceres, the former “TUF” standout. Figueroa was won two straight.
“Immortal” Brown back on track.
Matt Brown may or may not be “Immortal,” as his nickname suggests, but he sure has managed to hang around in the UFC’s welterweight division.
Brown has grinded his way through 11 UFC fights since 2008, showing promise, but never quite building enough momentum to break through. But he’s hoping to turn the page in 2012 after scoring a knockout victory over Chris Cope at UFC 143 Saturday.
“That’s exactly what I need to be doing,” said Brown (13-11) “I got away from who I am.”
Brown controlled the action in round one against a tentative Cope (5-4), but never got an opening to do serious damage. That changed early in round two, when he feigned a left, followed with a big right hand that connected, then floored Cope with a left hook. He landed a few more shots on the ground before referee Kim Winslow stopped it at 1:19.
The win came as a relief to Brown, who had lost four of his previous five fights. “I’ve got a right hand to knock out anybody, I hope to see more of that.”

Yas Marina Circuit + Troy Bayliss + Ducati 1199 Panigale S
The International press launch of the Ducati 1199 Panigale is underway in Abu Dhabi this week, with initial reports on Ducati’s flagship superbike being very positive. A track usually reserved for cars, not bikes, the Yas Marina Circuit is really something to behold. Situated on a man-made island off the Abu Dhabi coast, the Middle-Eastern track cost a cool $1.32 billion to construct back in 2009, and holds the distinction for being one of Formula One’s night races. While we wait for the Panigale to come across the Atlantic Ocean, Ducati has put together this video of Troy Bayliss taking a lap around the 21 turns of the Yas Marina Circuit. It’s an oddly edited video, but should bring grins to the Ducatisti in your life.

Reader feedback: Arguments continue over Carlos Condit-Nick Diaz decision
It’s clear three days after the fact that the Carlos Condit’s unanimous-decision win over Nick Diaz will go down as one of the most hotly debated fights in UFC history.
Everyone has a take, as is clear from the 446 (and counting) comments in my most recent blog post, in which I asked whether aggression and Octagon control are even counted any more when judges render their decision.
There were a lot of interesting points raised by the readers, and I think some of them were worth highlighting. (Here’s a hint for future feedback posts: Notice that people who made cogent points got mentioned here, and those who resorted to personal insults were ignored).
Let’s have at it:
Commenter Moore says: “I agree aggression should be taken more into account so we don’t have fighters going for points rather that fighting. But Diaz has beat his last ELEVEN opponents by pushing them to the cage and unloading on them. What did you expect Condit to do?”
That’s a great point. It obviously would have been pretty dumb of Condit to just stand in front of Diaz. The question is whether his game plan did enough to earn him the victory. I still maintain Condit came up just short.
@evolution1085 on Twitter says: @davedoylemma has never seen lateral movement in a fight before.
Frankie Edgar, for one, has tremendous lateral movement and his fights are among the most compelling in MMA. One thing you don’t see Edgar do is turn form his opponent and run to safety, which we saw once too often from Condit against Diaz. Again, running is a foul under MMA rules, for which points can be deducted.
KD says: So under the criteria that Doyle laid out, Roy Nelson should have been tabbed the winner in his fight with Werdum as he was constantly moving forward and being the aggressor?
Ummm … no. Did you see the pictures of Nelson’s face after the fight? I’m not in any way implying that aggression and Octagon control be the only factors considered in the fight, just pointing out that they’re actually listed in the Unified Rules and seem to be too often ignored.
Pa-boy says: You don’t like the judge’s decisions then end the fight yourself.
Can’t argue with that one, amigo.
Wb says: Thank GOD! I thought after some of the other articles I’d read (and comments I’d received) I was one of the few who thought that fight was judged incorrectly!!! Let me state, I do NOT have a problem with Condit getting the nod (personally I scored it 3/2 for Diaz but could see how it might have been judged 3/2 Condit). Still after having seen the judges scorecards its hard to understand what fight they were scoring or more specifically by what criteria. 2 of the 3 gave Condit the second round!? For the record that was the only round that Diaz out-struck him. To say that Carlos won 4 of the 5 rounds on judges sheets seems to indicate they have no concept of octagon control or aggression and were simply counting strikes.
Eddie, via Facebook, says: absolutely agree with your article on the Diaz/Condit fight. the judges’ criteria include ring aggression and generalship: basically who’s bossing the fight. this isn’t boxing where you can dance and outpoint your foe with jabs.
Wb, Eddie, you guys are clearly smart people with bright futures.
